Should Dining Room Have Rug

A rug under your dining table brings color and life into your dining room and helps make the space look and feel more special. After all, your dining room is a sacred gathering place, where family, close friends, and guests come together to eat and celebrate. But before you pick the color and style of your dining room rug, think about the size and shape of your dining room and table. This will help you identify the perfect size of dining room rug you'll need for your space.

How to Pick the Right Rug Size for Your Dining Room

As a general rule, your dining room rug should be larger than your dining table by 24 to 30 inches on all four sides. The rug should sit directly under the dining table and centered in the room to make the space feel balanced. The dining chairs should sit completely on the rug, with enough room to pull the chairs out and still remain on the rug.

Once you've decided on the rug size, mark out the area in your dining room with a blue painter's tape to see how it looks before you buy the rug.

Rug Size for Dining Table With 8 Chairs

A large dining table for 8 measures about 3'x6' or 4'x6' and would fit best on a 9'x12′ or 8'x10' rug. This leaves you at least 24 inches on all sides for the dining chairs to be moved easily while staying on the rug.

A dining table for 4 would measure about 3' in diameter (round table) or 3'x3' (square table) and would fit best on a rug that is 8′ round rug or 8'x8' square rug. You might also float the dining table and chairs in the center of a standard 5'x7′, 6'x9', or an 8'x10' rug.

If you're using a larger rug to fit the space, you might consider placing the table and chairs on one side and a buffet or console table on the other.

5 More Tips for Choosing Your Dining Room Rug

1.  For the best overall look, match the shape of the dining room rug to the shape of the room.

2. Consider the other visible elements in the dining room and beyond: wall colors, floor material, window treatments, dining furniture, etc. Select a dining room rug that will complement and unify them.

3. A textured rug with a bit of pile, like a plush rug, will provide better acoustics, softening the sounds of plates and silverware clinking. However, make sure you're still able to slide your chair easily over it.

4. You'd also want a rug that won't show every crumb. Unless your rug can be easily washed, try to stay away from lighter colors for the dining room. Rugs in a darker hue or pattern will camouflage stains and last longer.

5. Spills are inevitable, so you'd definitely want a rug that can be cleaned and vacuumed regularly—or better yet, washable.
